Pinewood Derby's - The Bane of All Good Mothers

BUT, I loved it this year! Who'd have guessed that would ever come out of my mouth? Here's the difference:

* There were no security guards or secret police ready to haul your hiney in, if you so much as glanced at the track. In fact, the track was set up outside (wind and all) with tons of play cars brought to entertain little kids and adults alike, until the real races began.

* Prior to the race there was a potluck, chili cook-off (mothers can be competitive too you know.) Cars - gas - see how it fits?

* The kits were given out just two days before, and nobody cared! (We'll pretend that my being den leader and forgetting had nothing to do with it.) It left little time for scheming dads to figure out ways to smoke the little guys. In fact, the scouts actually made their cars by themselves at den meeting! Whoa. Novel concept.

* Anybody and everybody could make a car, or two, or three... And they did! Sixty year olds, twenty year olds, five year olds. One and all, and a race for each. An illegal race. A traditional race. A biggest looser race. An adult race. Etc, etc...

AND- Last but not least..

* No crying boys when the mother/den leader forgets to tell the boys about the concept of weights. Because it's no biggee when the guy in charge has electrical tape, and there are lots of broken bricks nearby...

Magic. You should try it.
